The New Hope of Genetic Research

Posted by: Dr. Karyn Dyehouse, OHC

It's been an exciting ten years in medicine, since researchers unraveled the code that makes us human. Beginning with the mapping of the human genome in 2001, we have experienced radical change in our approach to pharmaceuticals, oncology and hematology. We now see the real benefits of cancer treatments that attack the disease at the genetic level.

We will not stand at a podium someday to announce a cure for cancer. A silver bullet may not emerge. What we will see is a steady progression of new medications and treatments that offer the hope that at least some forms of cancer will be eliminated or that targeted genetic interventions will prevent the disease's progression.

Genetic research is giving new hope to those of us touched by cancer.
