OHC has joined forces with Be The Match Registry, operated by the National Marrow Donor Program, to host a registry donor drive on Sept. 14 in support of Blood Cancer Awareness Month. The American Cancer Society estimates 171,550 people in the U.S. are expected to be diagnosed with a blood cancer, such as leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma, this year.

“For thousands with blood cancers like leukemia or other diseases such as aplastic anemia, marrow transplantation may be their best chance for life,” said Dr. James Essell, OHC oncologist and hematologist. “Patients are searching for a cure. That cure could be you!”

Be The Match Registry Drive will be hosted at:

Date: September 14
Time:  3:00 pm – 6:00 pm
Location: OHC Wilmington Office, 78 West Locust Street, Wilmington, Ohio 45177
Required Age: Donors should be ages 18 to 44
Cost: There is no charge to participate.

Participants will have their cheek cells swabbed. Then, a tissue type will be conducted from the sample to identify a possible match. ”This simple cell collection could save the life of someone fighting a blood cancer,” notes Dannielle Moore, Be The Match representative for Southern Ohio and Kentucky.

When an individual joins the Be The Match Registry, they are listed on the registry until the age of 61. The chances of being a match are about 1 in 430.

About 70 percent of all patients who need a transplant don’t have a matched donor in their family. A patient’s likelihood of finding a matching donor on the Be The Match Registry is estimated to range from 66-97 percent, depending on race and ethnicity.

For additional questions about the upcoming donor drive or future drives, please contact Dannielle Moore at (877) 601-1926 ext. 7743.
