Springfield, OH, May 15, 2018 — King Letsie III, the Constitutional Monarch of the southern African Kingdom of Lesotho, was guest speaker at Wittenberg’s commencement last week. While here, his group met with members of OHC’s Springfield team and the Springfield Regional Cancer Center.
Lineo Moseunyane, Architect Operations at Ministry of Public Works, was especially interested because she commissioned to build the first cancer center in Lesotho. Currently, they have to send their people to South Africa or to India. By the time they can set up traveling and medical care, patients have metastatic disease and they die before they can obtain treatment. If they are in the early stages, they are placed on a waiting list behind South African’s citizens.
Lesotho, with a population of just over two million people, is contained entirely within South Africa. Landlocked and mountainous, the country’s lowest point is higher than that of any other country in the world. It is one of the world’s poorest countries and also faces one of the highest rates of HIV/AIDs. Those factors, combined with poor soil and climatic conditions, make malnutrition, especially among children, a primary issue. In 2013, the country’s government announced that over half a million children in Lesotho suffered from malnutrition.
Most people who visit fall in love with Lesotho, its people and its culture. It’s no wonder that in the country’s native language there is no word for ‘stranger.’
