From OHC
October 15, 2024
In the face of natural disasters, it is often the collective spirit and unwavering dedication of individuals and communities that shine the brightest. Such is the story of Amanda Combs, a devoted medical assistant at OHC West, whose remarkable efforts, alongside her husband and friends, have brought hope and relief to the victims of Hurricane Helene in North Carolina.
The Inspiration Behind the Effort
Amanda’s journey to aid the hurricane victims was deeply personal. Her husband, a former military serviceman, felt a compelling need to assist those affected by the disaster. Their close friend, who owns a mobile welding company, also felt the urge to help after witnessing the devastation firsthand during his travels for work. Together, with their spouses, they decided to take action.
What started as a modest plan to fill a work van with donations quickly grew into a massive community effort. The overwhelming support from friends, family, and local businesses turned their vision into reality. Amanda recalls, “Our original plan was just to take his work van… then everybody jumped in, and we had more than we could transport in one trip.”
Notable Contributions
The success of this relief drive was made possible by the generous contributions of several businesses and individuals:
- Mercedes-Benz of West Chester: Donated two box trucks to transport the supplies.
- First Christian Church of Middletown: Provided a substantial donation of new clothing.
- Ace Mobile Welding: Played a key role in organizing the effort.
- C&T Design: Contributed essential resources.
- OLIO Development Group: Offered support and donations.
- Al-Joe’s Lawn & Garden: Provided necessary supplies.
- Countless local families and individuals who donated their time, money, and resources.
The Road Ahead
The first trip was a resounding success, with numerous supplies delivered to those in need. However, the need for assistance continues. Amanda and her team are preparing for a second trip and are actively seeking donations. Given the specific needs on the ground, they are requesting the following items:
- Nonperishable foods
- Camping supplies
- Propane
- Premixed 2-stroke gas
- 2-stroke oil
- Bar oil
- New winter coats (no other clothing items, please)
- Baby supplies (diapers, formula, bottles, baby food)
- Cleaning supplies
Financial donations are also welcome and will be used to purchase specific supplies as needed. Amanda is coordinating the collection of donations at the OHC West location. If you would like to donate, please email OHCCares@usoncology.com to facilitate delivery.
A Heartfelt Thank You
Amanda has been in awe of the outpouring of support. “The gratitude for all the help, for all the support, for all the donations cannot be explained,” she says. The collective effort of the community has been nothing short of inspiring, showcasing the power of unity and compassion.
As Amanda continues to care for her patients at OHC, her commitment to helping others extends far beyond the walls of the medical center. Her dedication to both her profession and her humanitarian efforts highlights the extraordinary impact that dedicated individuals and communities can have in times of crisis.
