From OHC

December 12, 2024

The holiday season is a time of joy, celebration, and togetherness. However, for individuals battling cancer, this festive period can present unique challenges to their mental health. The emotional toll of cancer treatment, combined with the added stress of holiday expectations, can exacerbate feelings of anxiety, depression, and isolation.  At OHC, we see these struggles during this time and want to make sure our patients, and their caregivers, can identify the symptoms and have solutions to managing these feelings.

Understanding the Impact

Cancer diagnosis and treatment can significantly impact a person’s mental health. The physical and emotional demands of the disease, along with the uncertainty it brings, can lead to a range of psychological symptoms. During the holidays, these challenges may intensify.

Here are some common mental health concerns we’ve seen our patients struggle with during this time of year:

  • Increased Stress and Anxiety: The pressure to attend social gatherings, plan events, and fulfill holiday obligations can be overwhelming for those undergoing treatment or recovering from it.
  • Feelings of Isolation and Loneliness: Cancer can lead to social isolation, and the holiday season, often characterized by family gatherings and social events, can exacerbate these feelings.
  • Grief and Loss: The holiday season can be a poignant reminder of loved ones lost, particularly for those who have experienced bereavement due to cancer.  It can also exacerbate the fear of the unknown future if you are early in your diagnosis.
  • Financial Strain: Medical expenses associated with cancer treatment can put a significant financial burden on patients and their families, adding to stress and anxiety during the holidays.

Coping Strategies for Cancer Patients

While the holiday season can be challenging, there are effective strategies to manage mental health and maintain well-being:

  1. Set Realistic Expectations: Setting realistic expectations for yourself and avoiding overcommitting is important. Prioritize activities that bring you joy and minimize stress. Your friends and family will be understanding and accept your boundaries.
  2. Practice Self-Care: Prioritize self-care activities, such as relaxation techniques, mindfulness meditation, or spending time in nature. These practices can help reduce stress and promote relaxation.
  3. Seek Social Support: Connect with loved ones, friends, or support groups to share your feelings and experiences. Talking to others who understand what you’re going through can provide comfort and support.
  4. Professional Help: Don’t hesitate to seek professional help from a mental health professional. They can provide therapy, medication, or other interventions to help manage symptoms of anxiety and depression. Many organizations in our community can provide counseling.  Please speak with your OHC care team about our Supportive Care Program or get a referral for services.
  5. Limit Social Obligations: If attending social gatherings feels overwhelming, don’t feel pressured to participate. Set boundaries and prioritize activities that bring you peace and joy.
  6. Practice Gratitude: Focusing on the positive aspects of your life, no matter how small, can help improve your mood and outlook. Keep a gratitude journal to record things you’re thankful for.
  7. Healthy Lifestyle: Prioritize a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet, regular exercise, and adequate sleep. These habits can boost your energy levels and improve your overall well-being.  Even the smallest change can help make a difference.
  8. Mindfulness Techniques: Mindfulness techniques, such as deep breathing and meditation, can help you stay present and reduce stress.
  9. Limit Alcohol and Drug Use: Avoid excessive alcohol consumption and drug use, as these substances can worsen mental health symptoms.
