In 2003, Cancer Family Care established the Unsung Hero Awards in memory of Joslin Haggart Yeiser. According to her husband, Eric Yeiser, Joslin was a quiet hero. “It is fitting that the Unsung Hero Awards be named for Joslin. Even in her last months, when she was suffering from cancer and in pain, she was still able to maintain her smile, sense of humor, and served as an inspiration to all who knew her,” said Mr. Yeiser.
This year, OHC was honored to have four nominees who were named Unsung Heroes.
UNSUNG HERO: OHC’S TAMARA SMITH. Nominated By: Julie Chambers – “Tamara goes above and beyond for our patients. As our Financial Navigator for our patients, she pulls in every resource she can to get them the help they need. She also recently made scrapbooks for two of our patients that went on the Honor Flight.”
UNSUNG HERO: OHC’S AJIT GUBBI, DO.
- Nominated By: JoAnne Abramsohn – “Dr. Gubbi not only went above and beyond to treat the cancer, he made me feel as important as a family member! He cares about my life!”
- Nominated By: Sarah Hughes – “Dr. Gubbi has been there every step of the way. He put my husband and me at ease from the very beginning and has always been upfront and honest about diagnosis, treatment and results.”
- Nominated By: Alicia Weber – “Dr. Gubbi’s become a friend that I trust my whole life with! He saved my life and continues to show care and gives me his best professionally. He is my Unsung Hero.”
UNSUNG HERO: OHC’S PETER FRIED, MD. Nominated By: Terry Scott, Sr. – “When I was diagnosed with prostate cancer, I was scared to the point I was not going to do treatment. Then my wife told Dr. Fried about me – and that’s when the MAGIC happened. Thanks to him, I’m alive to welcome my newest grandbaby.”
UNSUNG HERO (POSTHUMOUS): OHC PATIENT EMILY SCHAEFER. Nominated By: Suzanne Partridge, MD – “What struck me about Emily from the beginning, had to be her bravery. She truly took her disease with the most maturity possible and she had a talent of making it somehow fun. I often thought her soul was one of those special ones sent to us to learn. I think one of her purposes was to show me this. In the end, she was telling me it was going to be okay.”
